“Name a Star” Certificates

There are roughly 1 billion trillion stars in the universe, and yet somebody thought it was a good idea to start selling these pieces of space – in which you name a star and receive a certificate of ownership. The worst part? It worked. Thousands per year pay between $20-$100 to claim ownership to a piece of the universe. Just… why?
