1950s: Poodle Skirts and Pearls
Well, this is awkward. While the 1940s brought a new wave of women into the workforce and fought against gender stereotypes, the 1950s basically did the opposite. The baby boom generation post WWII meant that women were expected to stay at home with the kids, cook and clean and be the perfect 1950s housewife – all while wearing diamonds and pearls. The fashion of this era was all about elegance, but it was definitely not the finest moment for feminism.
