1900s: The Corset
Before there were the sketchy waist trainers promoted by Instagram influencers, there was the S-bend corset – a staple in Edwardian era fashion. It altered a woman’s posture and gave her the hourglass shape that was expected at the time, but at quite a cost. The S-bend corset was initially believed to be healthier for women that the Victorian era corset, as it placed less pressure on the abdomen. What they didn’t realize is that it really messed with the spine and caused internal organ damage. Squeezing yourself into a skintight corset and risking your safety for a tiny waist? Sure, people still do it today… but it’s pretty cray.
